Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $2.2 million grant to the Brunswick County Industrial Development Authority, Lawrenceville, Virginia, for construction of a produce processing and distribution facility.
This project will create jobs in the local produce industry and promote long-term economic resilience. The EDA investment will be matched with $1.5 million in local funds and is expected to create 60 jobs, retain 143 jobs, and generate $3.9 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.
“President Biden is committed to supporting communities as they develop safe and resilient infrastructure to serve local businesses and build a better America,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo. “This project will provide for a new produce processing and distribution center, supporting long-term business development and job growth, while enabling farmers to meet local and regional demand.”
“The Economic Development Administration is pleased to support Lawrenceville as they seek to diversify the region’s economy,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo. “This EDA grant will provide for construction of the facility as well as necessary infrastructure, including HVAC, electrical and mechanical systems, sewer service, fire protection and other necessities in support of industrial development in the region.”
“Today’s announcement sends a clear message that Virginia is open for businesses and that the federal government is ready to invest in the businesses in our Commonwealth,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Brunswick County Industrial Development Authority’s job retainment and growth will continue to help drive the Commonwealth’s economic growth.”
“Virginia will continue to make long-term investments in our communities thanks to these federal funds,” said Senator Mark Warner. “I am proud that this project will boost the local economy, retain and create new jobs, and spur business development in the area all while supporting the produce industry and the Commonwealth’s farmers.”
