SBA: New York Director Announces Small Business Week Awardees

New York –  The results are in. Businesses from across the New York SBA District – the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and seven down-state counties of the Mid and Lower Hudson – submitted applications to the 2017 National Small Business Week Awards. Judges selected nine winners in various categories, ranging from Small Business Development Center for Excellence and Innovation award to Small Business Person of the Year and Home-Based Business of the Year. Each winner has been invited to the award ceremony on May 1, 2017, at the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) headquarters, 26 Federal Plaza in lower Manhattan.

New York SBA District Director Beth Goldberg pointed out that more than half of all Americans either own or work for a small business. “Small businesses are economic engines that create nearly two out of every three new jobs each year. Small businesses support our neighborhoods and strengthen our communities. They encourage local, sustainable development and it’s a great privilege to recognize the hard work of each winner and the combined efforts of all small businesses throughout the district.”

More than 1.6 million small businesses are located within the New York SBA’s district. These companies employ 5 million Americans and have a combined payroll of more than $300 billion per year.

Each year since 1963, the president has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. National Small Business Week is set as the first week in May, and this year the dates are April 30 – May 6 with national events planned in Washington, D.C., New York City, Indianapolis, Dallas and Fresno, Calif.

“New York SBA will be honoring the contributions of small business owners throughout the week of April 30th to May 6th,” said John Mallano, Deputy District Director of the New York SBA. “Join us for the May 1st ceremony and then stop by the various SBA workshops that will continue through the week.”
