ABA: Joanne Campbell and Jim Bedsole Receive ABA Distinguished Service Awards for Risk and Compliance

Joanne Campbell, executive vice president of enterprise risk management and chief risk officer for Camden National Bank in Camden, Maine, and Jim Bedsole, senior vice president and chief compliance and risk officer for BankSouth in Greensboro, Ga., today received the 2023 American Bankers Association’s Distinguished Service Award for Risk and the Distinguished Service Award for Compliance, respectively. The awards, which recognize leadership, initiative and accomplishment in banking regulatory risk and compliance management, as well as volunteer service through ABA, were presented during ABA’s Risk and Compliance Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Campbell is the first recipient of the ABA Distinguished Service Award for Risk and Bedsole is the 29th recipient of the ABA Distinguished Service Award for Compliance.

“Joanne and Jim have dedicated their careers to strengthening bank risk and compliance management while sharing their knowledge, experience and support with other industry professionals along the way,” said Ginny O’Neill, ABA’s executive vice president of regulatory compliance and policy. “We are grateful for their efforts and the example they set. They are ideal recipients of this year’s Distinguished Service Awards.”

Campbell has worked at Camden National Bank for more than 27 years and is set to retire on July 7.  In her current role, she oversees enterprise risk management, cyber and information security, physical security, fraud, compliance, Bank Secrecy Act, audit, corporate governance and the bank’s in-house counsel. Additionally, she serves as co-chair, representing risk, for the new ABA Risk and Compliance Conference.  Prior to being co-chair, Campbell served many years as a board member of the ABA Regulatory Compliance Conference and the ABA Risk Management Conference. Campbell is a frequent speaker at these events and brings significant depth and experience to the conference programming. She is also an active participant with the Maine Bankers Association and serves on its compliance and legislative committees. Campbell is a Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM).

Bedsole has served a number of financial institutions in various compliance-related roles throughout his 37-year banking career, including his most recent post with BankSouth which he accepted in 2014.  He holds a number of certifications including Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), Certified Enterprise Risk Professional (CERP), Certified Bank Auditor (CBA), Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA), Certified Anti-Money Laundering and Fraud Professional (CAFP), Certified Cannabis Banking Professional (CCBP) and Fair Lending Expert (FLE). Bedsole has served as co-chair for the ABA’s Enterprise Risk Management Working Group for Community Banks and as faculty and a conference speaker for the ABA National Compliance School. He’s also active with the Georgia Bankers Association as past chairman and current member of the GBA Compliance Committee and chairman of the GBA Compliance School Board. Additionally, Bedsole is an Army veteran and spent two years on active duty serving in the Artillery Corps and five years in the South Carolina Army National Guard.
