Census Bureau: New 2022 Annual Integrated Economic Survey Announced

The U.S. Census Bureau this week announced the launch of the 2022 Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES), a limited-scope collection of the 2023 AIES that will launch in March 2024. The AIES provides key yearly measures of economic activity, including the only comprehensive national and subnational data on business revenues, employment, expenses and assets on an annual basis. Approximately 8,300 companies will be asked to complete the 2022 AIES. Responses to the 2022 AIES will be used to examine patterns of response to determine what additional support will be needed for future data collections. With the full launch of the 2023 AIES, approximately 385,000 companies will be in scope.

The AIES is designed to consolidate and combine content from seven current economic surveys: the Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES); Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS); Annual Wholesale Trade Survey (AWTS); Service Annual Survey (SAS); Report of Organization (COS); Annual Survey of Manufacturers; and the Manufacturers’ Unfulfilled Orders Survey (M3UFO). Companies selected to receive the 2022 AIES are those that would have normally received two or more of the aforementioned seven surveys in a single year and will be required to respond to the 2022 AIES collection in lieu of these surveys.

Data collected as part of the 2022 AIES will be used to supplement data that are currently being collected for five of the seven legacy surveys; the ASM and M3UFO do not collect data during the 2022 Economic Census. The seven surveys will officially transition to the AIES next year.
